When transporting your hedgehog, use your common sense to help ensure that your pet is safe and comfortable. First, select an appropriate carrier. A small plastic or soft sided pet carrier works well. Select one that is comfortable for your pet and easy for you to carry. In the car, give some though to the placement of the carrier. Keep it out of direct sunlight on hot days and do not put it directly in front of an open air-conditioning vent. Never leave your pet in the car on a hot day. Even though hedgehogs enjoy warm weather, a closed car will quickly become too hot and can result in heat stroke or death.
In cold weather, make sure your pet has plenty of fluffy bedding to snuggle in. If you need to take your pet out in cold weather, place a hot water bottle or one of the small hand-warmer packets sold for sportsmen inside an old sock and place that in the carrier. Make sure the hedgehog has enough room to move away from the hand-warmer should it be too hot for the hedgehog. Take the time to warm up the care before transporting your hedgehog. You can also cover your carrier with a blanket or towel when moving from the house to the car.
DON'T FORGET THE NECESSITIES
Be prepared for any type of delay by bringing along some of your hedgehog's supplies from home. A ration of its favourite dry food is essential as well as some treat items, like bits of fruit and vegetables. Don't forget to bring some water from home as familiar water will ensure your hedgehog will accept drinking from it because it smells familiar.
