| Lake Nakuru is one of the three inter-linked lakes in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. These lakes are home to 13 globally threatened bird species and some of the highest bird diversities in the world. An absolutely incredible feature of Lake Nakuru is the large gatherings of long-legged, long-necked greater and lesser flamingos. The lake's ab undance of algae attracts these birds that famously line the shore. In fact, Lake Nakuru is the single most important foraging site for the lesser flamingo anywhere, and a major nesting and breeding ground for great white pelicans. It has been described by ornithologists as the greatest bird spectacle in the world [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] | |

xoxox Nearly Melody..... The pink or reddish colour of flamingos comes from carotenoid proteins in their diet of animal and plant plankton. These proteins are broken down into pigments by liver enzymes. The source of this varies by species, and affects the saturation of colour. Flamingos whose sole diet is blue-green algae are darker in colour compared to those who get it second hand (e.g. from animals that have digested blue-green algae). Zoo-fed flamingos, who often lack the colour enhancer in their diet, may be given food with the additive canthaxanthin.

I should have said the eating of shrimps (a pigmented crustacean) is one of the ways that they may turn pink..... Flash my Secret Santa's gift in front of them and they'll be sure to blush a pink to very red... Very quickly xoxox
