Hedgehog Bottom
Hedgehogs can make you laugh your socks off or they can have you in tears. Last night I was in fits of laughter whilst cleaning and feeding the two little monsters in the outside hospital hutch.
The hutch is in a sheltered position and neither of the occupants appear to be thinking of hibernating yet despite all the other outsiders being fast asleep. It's 4ft long and has a large bed area at one end with a full height entrance rather than a small doorway.
They have packed the enclosed part solid with hay and newspaper and each has his own separate nest.
One of them is always eager for his dinner and is often sitting in the entrance waiting for it. Last night was no different so I began to clean out, put in fresh newspaper on the floor then fill the dish with biscuits at which point a ball of spines suddenly flew through the air and bounced along the bottom of the feeding area ending up in the far corner.
It appears the second inmate, on hearing the food, had shot out of his nest and scared the bejabers out of the first one who had balled up and then been catapulted through the air by his over keen hutchmate.
Whilst this was enough to cause a wry smile, it was the rather confused and sheepish little face that slowly appeared from the ball of spines that had me in fits.
