More than 70 hedgehogs in Guernsey are being fostered this winter according to the animal shelter.

Most are housed at the Guernsey Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) Animal Shelter, with more being looked after by volunteers.

Between November and March hedgehogs normally hibernate but the recent mild weather meant more were being seen.

The GSPCA has asked islanders to provide hedgehog friendly areas in their garden.

Officers have asked people to make sure the areas have piles of leaves and brushwood.

The charity also says to avoid giving them cows' milk or bread, which can upset their stomachs.

At least one hedgehog is brought to the centre either sick or injured every day.

Any hedgehogs seen out in daylight, ones with injuries, or baby hedgehogs weighing less than 500g need urgent help.
