HEDGEHOGS appear to be bored with rural life and are moving to cities.

Such is the migration that there are now more in urban areas than in the countryside.

A study at Bristol University discovered that they prefer to live in the gardens of semi-detached or terraced homes, where there is likely to be more food.

Researchers attached radio transmitters and tracked hedgehogs at night. Females avoided detached homes because their larger gardens could attract badgers – their only predator.

But males needed to explore further to find potential mates.

Professor Stephen Harris said: “They clearly cope with the challenges provided by human- dominated habitats and make a successful transition from rural to urban living.”
