Traveling all day yesterday, I observed one thing: lots of Badger and Fox roadkill. No Hedgehogs.
Just a few years ago, I would see Hedgehog roadkill on a regular basis. Today, I am seeing fewer and fewer. Fortunate, you might think. But the decline of Hedgehog roadkill represents a more sinister reality. It does not show they have learnt how to avoid on-coming cars. It in fact shows their population is declining rapidly. It is through counting the numbers of dead Hedgehogs on the side of the road that the figure of a 37% decline in the last 10 years has emerged. Therefore, the more Hedgehog roadkill, the happier scientists are, as it represents a healthy population.
