Prickles Hedgehog Rescue - 2nd March 2013

A new admission today. A female hedgehog was found in a garden yesterday during the day by a dog. She came into Prickles today, she is very thin but is settling into Prickles and is currently under assessment.

Update on Female


The female hedgehog who was admitted to Prickles on Thursday is no longer under assessment. She is stable and gaining weight daily. She came out of hibernation thin and weak, hopefully she will be released back to the wild when she is strong!


The female hedgehog admitted to Prickles yesterday is stable! The hoglets had their first feed of the day at 5.30am, they are now tucked up in the incubator!

What is happening in hoglet land!? They have moved to 2.5 hourly feeds and are changing colour. Hoglets are born pink and within 36 hours the white spines appear. There skin is now turning grey and they have black and white spines. They can get huffy and will huff and puff especially when they are being washed! They look great and are feeding really well, photo shoot tomorrow!

There is lots going on at Prickles at the moment a couple of things to be going on with.

Don't think I have mentioned Mr Grumps, he is a large hog that has been with us for over a month. He came in grumpy and has remained grumpy BUT bless him he has toothache, he had a front tooth removed last week by Colin. An X-ray was taken which revealed an infection on another tooth. He is on anti biotic and is due to see the dental surgeon on the 11th March! He has a simple sign on his crate, "I bite"! An update the mum of the hoglets is well and was given the all clear by Colin, vet on Friday!

Feeding Time Last Night x

Hoglets were up at 6.00am, very hungry grabbing the teat! There eyes look as though they are going to open any day and there ears will follow! They are a lot stronger now and today we will be increasing feed but extending the time in between feeds, edging towards 2.5 - 3 hourly! Will post photos later!

The lunchtime pose, the female on the left is not happy. She just wanted to go to sleep!

The two little hoglets continue to thrive! The little girls eyes are just opening, the little boy is slightly behind developmentally but no doubt will soon catch his sister up!

The hoglets were on page 18 of The Times today! Famous!!

Pleased they are doing well.

Update -09.03.13

Unfortunately one of the hoglets is poorly, the little female! We think she has a bacteria infection and is being treated for such! They can be complex to hand rear and we are all hoping she will be ok!

Sadly the little female has died! We think she had aspiration pneumonia, this is when they inhale milk and it goes onto the lung! We were extremely careful with them but she would guzzle the milk! Her brother continues to thrive, we all feel devastated!

Sadly the other little hoglet died this morning with exactly the same symptoms so we now think there was something else that caused this! We were so careful with them!

Spikey Critters Hedgehog Care

Finally ..... with the recently cold snap ...... Eden has decided it is time to have a sleep ...... Yay .... Knowing him it probably won't be for long and he won't want to miss too much :-)

Eve and Kristian have also gone to sleep but Davina who has been asleep for ages now decided to wake up .... there is always one that has to be different, hopefully she has just topped up a bit and will go back to sleep again for a little longer.
