British Summer Time really did 'officially' end on Sunday 27th October. The arrival of gale force winds, torrential rain, thunder, lightning and general all round apocalyptic weather conditions was a bit of a hint. That was nature's subtle way of saying it's time to pack away the bar-b-que for another year.
And while we're on the subject of bar-b-ques (tenuous?), Hedgehogs are just starting their winter hibernation, tucked away amongst piles of leaves and sticks. If you have a pile of garden rubbish that you're planning to burn on Guy Fawkes night, please turn it over before lighting it to check that no wildlife has crawled inside for a nap. The smell of scorched hedgehog is not nice, and apparently it's not too good for the hedgehog either, so ideally start your fire next to the pile of sticks, and add bits to the fire as it burns.
