Can I feed Hedgehogs bread and milk?

The short answer, is a simple NO.

You cannot, and must not feed Hedgehogs bread or milk.

Do Hedgehogs Carry Fleas?

Yes, Hedgehogs sometimes do have fleas. The fleas are red or brown in colour and can sometimes be seen crawling through the Hedgehogs fur or spines. The fleas are passed down from the mother Hedgehog to her young, but may also be passed in others ways too. The fleas that live on a Hedgehog cannot live anywhere else. If they were to be transferred onto a human, cat, dog, or anything else, it would know it was in the wrong place. The flea would then drop off and wait for a Hedgehog.

Why are Hedgehogs covered in spines?

Hedgehogs are protected with spines to help them stay protected against animals such as Foxes, which would otherwise be able to catch the Hedgehog and eat it. However, some animals, such as Badgers, are able to 'break through' the spines - Badgers simply eat Hedgehogs from the inside out!

Why do Hedgehogs hibernate?

Hedgehogs hibernate in cold conditions, such as winter. They do so in order to survive - there simply is not enough food for them elsewhere, and they cannot survive the cold tempretures. When Hedgehogs hibernate, they drop down to a really cold tempreture... this can make the Hedgehog look like it has in fact died. They curl up into a tight ball, and will hibernate in places such as compost heaps. If there is a warm spell, Hedgehogs may wake up, which can be really dangerous, as there may not be enough food for them.

How good is a Hedgehog's eye site?

Hedgehogs have poor eye site, they mainly rely on a their sense of smell, which is very good, as is their heqaring. Hedgehogs have a very limited range of colours that they can see in.

Why do Hedgehogs curl up into a ball?

Hedgehogs do this to defend themselves against predators... as Hedgehogs can only run about as fast as a human's quick walk, most predators can catch them.. so curling up into a tight ball stops MOST (but not all) predators from eating them. Sometimes Hedgehogs curl into a ball when a car approaches, which of course is no defence at all.
