in 1982 Major Adrian Coles of Knowbury, Shropshire, descvered a hedgehog trapped in the cattle grid of his drive. He launched a successful campaign to have escape ramps installed in every cattle grid in the county, and as a result founded the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
The Society is a registered charity whose aims are to increase public awareness of how to care for hedgehogs, to fund research into their behavioural habits, and to encourage children's respect for wildlife.
Since its foundation, the Society has undertaken much important work in the field of hedgehog conservation, and has become a respected authority on the subject.
It continues to flourish, with a membership of over 11,000.
