1. Find a high sided box.
2. Fill a hot water bottle with hot but not boiling water, cover with a towel and place it in the box as flat as possible (little hoglets can crawl underneath and become trapped and squashed). If a hot water bottle is not available alternatives can be plastic milk bottles, squash bottles, ice cream tubs, marg cartons or wheat bags put inside a plastic bag and sealed to prevent suffocation.
3. Place hedgehog on the towel covering it over with a
loose end.
4. The hot water bottles must be checked regularly to see that they are kept warm.
5. Make sure the hedgehog has enough room to get off the heat if it requires. Hoglets cannot regulate temperatures very well. They can quickly become too hot or too cold.
6. DO NOT TRY TO FEED A COLD HEDGEHOG If it cannot swallow, any liquid goes straight into its lungs and causes suffocation. It must have a warm tummy before being safely syringe fed. Getting it warm enables us to treat it more quickly.
7. Telephone for help.
