How to Pick a Personality that Fits

Know what kind of behavior you are looking for as hedgehog personalities do not change dramatically over time.

Are you looking for:
•
A cuddler? Hedgehogs that like to snuggle are usually pretty calm and can really enjoy sitting in your laptop.

•
The comically timid? Best for a patient person.

•
A busy bee? Active hedgehogs are happiest with lots of room to explore and stuff to climb on. Some hedgehogs are actually particularly fascinated by climbing and will make every effort to climb your leg or walk into one’s hand.

The super shy? Hedgehogs are naturally shy animals. Some hedgehogs will start out shy and then after a few minutes they will uncurl and start being social. Other hedgehogs are just shyer and likely will always be that way. A hedgehog that is shy and less social is not necessarily going to make a poor pet – you just have to know what kind of behavior you would be happy with long term. Sometimes the shiest animals can be convinced to relax by giving them a sense of security. Place a towel or blanket over both of you and see if he or she can be persuaded to snuggle.
