This season we have had an extraordinarily high number of baby hedgehogs (Atelerix frontalis) coming in, about 20 in total!



These were brought in for a variety of reasons - some were orphaned by dogs (Jack Russells, to be precise!) and some were discovered in a cosy nest in a suburban compost heap. Unfortunately the gardener’s fork discovered them, killing one and injuring a second. The mother abandoned them after the disturbance of the family being brought in to FreeMe to avoid the dogs which now knew where the nest was!! This story serves as a warning to watch out for hedgehog nests in the compost heap; also be careful while mowing and edge-trimming, as they often dig a hollow at the lawn’s edge and sleep there, well hidden. Many adult hedgehogs are fished out of swimming pools. A suggestion is to cut a metre-long strip of shadecloth, drape it into the water and place a brick on the end, on the pool edge, to secure it. Hedgehogs, ducklings, goslings, mongooses, etc, cannot get out of a vertical-edged pool so this shadecloth serves as an ideal escape route.





The first five raised were from Centurion, handed in to the Pretoria SPCA. People had found them in a nest in their garden and refused to put them back so that the mother could carry on raising them! Their eyes hadn’t opened yet so we estimate their age at less than 18 days. All five readily accepted the hoglet formula they’re fed on every four hours, day and night. What follows here is a photographic diary of their progress to date; they are now six weeks old. They live in an outside enclosure now and are fed a diet of assorted insects only, which they have to root out for themselves from a pile of beautifully composted leaves, just like they would in the wild. It was noticed that their sense of smell even at a young age is well developed and they can find insects with accuracy. In about two weeks’ time, these five hoglets and others their age will move to a pre-release enclosure in the safe area that will be their home. A couple of weeks there to acclimatise and get used to new surroundings and then they’ll be out on their own!
