An appeal with a difference! Please check sheds and garages for hedgehogs. We have admitted three hogs recently who were trapped. The problem arises when they avoid the cold, wet weather and look for dry a place to hibernate/sleep. They wander into a shed or garage with a door left open! They bed down and the owner shuts the door not knowing there is a hedgehog in there! Many die every year through dehydration/starvation, please keep doors closed and check sheds and garages for hedgehogs!

One of those days, two calls in the last five minutes. A 200 gram hoglet and a juvenile! They are coming into Prickles first thing in the morning as they are stable, they are staying at the finders homes tonight!

Three admissions today, one was already dead on arrival but it was in a tight ball and looked as though it was hibernating! The other is a adult with lungworm and the third is a juvenile! We are worming all new admissions as a precaution as we are finding heavy infestations of lungworm and roundworm!

Fourth hedgehog of the day on its way to Prickles. It is a common occurrence during the autumn for hedgehog rescue centres to be inundated with little hedgehogs. They are part of a second or third litter and unfortunately they are often too small to survive hibernation, the safe hibernation weight being 650 grams. The hedgehogs are assessed and treated at Prickles and they remain with us awake during the winter. We like to return them to the place where they were found in the Spring, providing it is safe to do so! Prickles is caring for 68 hedgehogs at the moment. The smallest being 149 grams.

Little hoggie update .......

Rosemary who came in last week is doing well and now weighs just under 300g I have take a pic of her and will upload it shortly for you

Hayden is gaining weight and growing rapidly ... he now weighs 420g and I think he is definitely one of HRH's .... he was lovely and sweet when he came in but is now quite huffy.

Rosie is still trying to eat for England and it looks as though she has also turned over to the dark side ... after trying to nip my finger yesterday

Five admissions so far today, all juveniles that are too small to survive hibernation! They are in reasonable condition and are under assessment! We have stalled releases until after bon fire night! Hopefully the temperatures will remain mild!

Two hogs in during the past hour. One a 170 gram hoglet was found on top of a 6' wall. Really hope someone didn't put it on there and leave it?! Weather has been awful here, rain, thunder and hail stones. The little chap is tucked up on a heat pad!

The update is a little late, two admissions yesterday both juveniles. One was very poorly on arrival with enteritis, he is on fluid therapy. We are hoping he will be ok now that treatment is underway. The other one is a litter mate of one that came in on Saturday, he is a lot stronger.

Three hogs in yesterday, sadly one was a pts after it was found with both back legs fractured, it had been knocked by something it was found in the road! Poor little hog.
