Looking hopeful for more releases today. Still releasing in May is dreadful. Having my first coffee, watching Dan Dan after his second bowl of food. Please be careful in your gardens over the bank holiday.

Tonight Barley or Muffin to the finders came home to us. He is off to his new home hopefully in the next few days. He is alittle smaller than i would like but as he is disabled and going to a secure garden i am sure he will be fed up. First an MOT check, claws cutting and checking his wound for any rubbing.

Today has also been a sad day. Around 12 we had one of our girls returned to us. She was found on the neighbors garden lying on the grass. She had been attacked by a fox and received fatal injuries. She was put to sleep by our VET. We are unsure which one it was but Holly or Ivy didnt have much of freedom in their short life. Hedgehogs are having a rough old time of it, man made dangers, farmers pesticides and good old mother nature are just a few. If you are lucky to have a spiky visitor, please help them by respecting that they are a wild animal, not to be picked up, put to work as a slug eater in a trapped garden, poisons by your slug pellets but provide a home, some clean water and help them out with a little food. Then sit back and watch from a distance, they truly are an amazing creature.

Clevers and Tansy have left us today with more following i hope tomorrow. We are getting the last of the foster hogs back tomorrow and need them to leave as quick as possible. This year we had 17 foster carers and we needed every one of them. Thank you each and every one. With out you we would have had to close as door as early as October. The little girl below is Tansy

Hedgehog Release - By Tim Hunt Photography

I was lucky enough to be able to photograph the release of two hedgehogs which had been rescued by Willows Hedgehog Rescue.

Willows Hedgehog Rescue is a small self funded not for profit organisation. Their aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and release our native European Hedgehog.
Many of the hedgehogs that are rescued are badly injured or orphaned making them extremly venerable without support.

Hedgehogs really are amazing creatures. Up until now I had never really seen a hedgehog close up. It was another reminder of the wonders of the natural world that surrounds us.

Once the hedgehogs are ready to be released back into the wild, they are taken to a garden provided by a volunteer, where they will have a sufficient habitat.
You can see in the image below, the hedghogs are tagged with a small coloured bead (in this case blue) so they are able to identify them.

A cat cautiously sniffs the strange new residents before backing away knowing that the balls of spines are not to be messed with.

A hay lined box is provided so the hedgehogs would have a safe place to live.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The box is then placed in the undergrowth. A hedgehog will be place just outside the entrance so they can get used to their surrounding and have the choice of shelter.

Willows Hedgehog Rescue do an amazing job from rescue to release and will greatly benefit from your support.

Tonight Bifur has been released to a garden where we released a little female last year. There is still a hog in the garden eating the food so hopefully this little lad will find her. We have been told Daisy a female hog we released the other week stayed in the home and is eating well.

one of our male hogs have just left to Helen one of our foster carers. He had to have a back leg amputated due to his broken leg not setting. He will be closely watched to see how he copes before going to a secure garden. I am sure they will find a good name as well.

This is Hubble the hog that kept on escaping. Well today he no longer needs to as he is being returned back into the wild where he belongs.

This is Barley or Muffin to finders. He came in last year with his leg missing and using his healed over bone as a means to walk on. We had to remove the bone and today he went to his new home, a lovely secure garden with loads of plants.

Another hog in coming. We seem to be getting a lot of hogs in at the moment with breathing problems and not all relating to worms.

Little Popeye has really got a fight on his hands. He came in with a dead eye hanging out of the socket, a part missing leg which had healed over but you can still see bone moment. Despite antibiotics, his missing eye socket is now infected, he has mites and now tested positive for Lungworm. If he manages to beat all of these and put some weight on he has to go under to have the rest of his back leg off. poor little hog.

Rosie Back Again

Some good news! Rosie our first orphaned HH, who came to us in 2011 made an appearance in our garden early this morning after her second winter of hibernation. Rosie was born in June 2011 and was found weighing just 97 gms in an abandoned nest, her sibling was dead. The local HH Rescue Centre hand reared her to a suitable weight and she came to us for further feeding up to 548 gms before her release in our garden on 14th September. She has always stayed on the 'dumpy' side of large, so she is quite easy to spot. She has wintered well and while we don't know exactly where she is nesting, it cannot be too far and she knows where the regular feeding station and water dish are. Sue is well pleased that the second of her two 'Girls' has returned, Freda having been seen on camera earlier in the year (3 April, below).

Hedgehog Twosome Reel

The patio camera picked up a bit action overnight that included a couple of cats, a fox and what looked like 3 different hedgehogs visiting to feed and take a drink. There was one HH encounter just after 01.12 a.m. and the video gives you an idea how a female may react to the advances of a new male, take your partners and start the music.......... — at Bromsgrove.

update: a few of the sick ones has passed the poo test and can now leave us. Popeye and the new fella that arrived yesterday are having hand feeds to help them through this critical time. Again if you find a poorly hog, dont have a go yourself as every hour does make a differance to its survival. If we receive a hog that is in a completely collasped state it is a very hard battle and time consuming to pull it back. Any hog out in daylight wobbling about needs attatention right away!!

Update: the new hog in two days ago collapsed has proved positive for Lung worm and the small sample i had there were loads of the nasty worms wiggling about. On a good note, Popeye is now stable and has finally ate for him self. fingers crossed its the start of an upwards path.

Before I even left today a new hog came in. this old fella 9 years old has been living his life in a secure garden. Being treated like a wild hog but just the safety of one garden. Now we checked this hog two years ago as they were about to move but had a change of heart. This morning they found him all wobbly by their back door. 999 rescue and he is here with us. He is blowing bubbles from his nose so treatment started. We are waiting for a poo sample to check for worms. Fingers cross this old man can go back to live the rest of his life in HIS garden.

Warning Ranting Lady !!! just phoned a lady to come and collect her hedgehog. They have discovered that the neighbor has been catching wild hedgehogs and taking them to an area that i know to have badgers. There is a number of reasons you DO NOT MOVE a hog. 1. It could be a mom and you have just killed the babies. 2. a hog get used to the area/parasites and moving it you could cause it harm and illness. 3. moving it to a badger set area means dinner for hungry badgers as they compete for the same food. Hedgehogs has no defense against a badger. 4 The area in question also has loads of activity from dogs, youth and loads of night time activity, not suitable for hogs to be out after dark. Not a happy women. i have asked that my number be passed to the neighbors so i can have a very polite chat about why hogs are suitable to live in an urban area.

on a sad note we have had two hogs come in, one an attack and the other what looks like a broken jaw. Sun comes out and every one hit the garden. This hog must have been disturbed today and hit. i really do dislike this time of year. :-(
