We have gone back to the beginning again - 2 very small hogs in on their own. One is very small and weak, not going to jinx its chances of survival by taking pix! The other was found near Leodis Vets, thanks to whoever told the lady to phone me. Thank you Sarah if it was you! He weighed only 111g last night but was up to 132g this morning, eating for himself...should be no problem, I hope....He is about 4-5 weeks old and has teeth.

Good day today, have released 2 hogs - one youngster back home where she was found and the nasty dog bite which you last saw on 7th October, for comparison, is now completely healed and scabs off, spines starting to re-grow too - she went to a lovely release site near where she was found but well away from those dogs in a lovely wooded valley.

One of our members brought me a small hog today, she found him last night at 6pm (old time BST) when it was just about light but he weighed in at 188g. You may be able to see that his bum is thinner than his head (always a bad sign - who do you know whose bum is smaller than their head???!) So if you see any hogs this size or even a bit bigger which fit onto one hand when you pick them up, even if it is after dark, please pick them up and keep them warm in a box with shredded newspaper to nest in and some water to drink and some dog or cat food to eat and ring us on 734340 if it's before 8pm, otherwise keep the hog in a warm room overnight and please ring us after 8am the NEXT day, don't leave it for several days in case the hog is sick and needs medicines which is usually the case. Thank you. If you are in the UK please phone the BHPS on 01584 890 801 for the details of a rescue centre in your area. Of course any hedgehog seen out in the day time whatever its size will need immediate help, please pick it up and seek advice.

Well its 2nd November and autumn is really here, we have been very quiet for the time of year and suddenly at noon today the phone line went red hot! Have admitted 7 little hogs in just under 2 hours, 2 arrived unannounced, 4 came chauffeur driven and one was very kindly collected by one of the members who had just brought in the hedgehog he had found, so he hot-footed it round to the hog who hadn't employed a chauffeur today! All but one of these was found out in daylight today, in the middle of a road, in gardens, on a pool cover and on a bank, so please do keep a look out for any hedgehog any size out in daylight and for small ones after dark, if they fit on one hand they will be too small to make it through the winter in the wild. This picture is of the first one to arrive who tucked straight into the food and has been munching on and off all afternoon - lovely sound to hear!

If you find a small hedgehog out during the day or at night time, please do not wait for several days before giving us a ring. Any hedgehog weighing less than 450g at this time of year will have trouble surviving the winter. Please pick it up put it in a box with ripped up newspaper or hay and some water to drink and some dog or cat food and ring us on 734340 if you are in Jersey. If it is after 8pm and the hog is unhurt please keep it in a warm room overnight and call us the next morning. If the hedgehog is injured or needs urgent veterinary attention, please phone New Era vets on 07797 711585 if you are able to take it to them. If you are unable to drive after dark, please phone the Animals' Shelter emergency ambulance service on 07797 720331 who will take the hedgehog to the vets for you. You will not be charged for either of these services.
If you are in the UK please phone the BHPS on 01584 890 801 for the details of a rescue centre in your area. Of course any hedgehog seen out in the day time whatever its size will need immediate help, please pick it up and seek advice.

Story to warm the cockles, yesterday an elderly couple from town were out on a Sunday drive to Grouville common and found a hog crossing the road, so they stopped picked it up...had to find a PHONE BOX - see some people do not have mobile phones! and found one with a phone book in tact not ripped up, found the number and got in touch, then brought the hog all the way from Grouville in a paper carrier bag! Restores my faith in humanity and will never moan about Sunday drivers again! Lovely people - and to remind you there is a world out there without mobiles!

So you know they are still tiny out there a man brought a hoglet weighing only 101g in on Saturday it had fallen down the steps to his basement flat and he found it when sweeping up the leaves, he had done that the last time a week ago..so the poor hog may have been down there some time, it gained 20g in the first 24 hours in care. See how furry it is, all skin no body yet, hope it will fill out in time!
