Description:

Brown or Red insects that are small. They can sometimes be seen jumping or walking though the Hedgehog's fur and spines.

Treatment:

Buy Johnson's Rid Miteā„¢ or a similar product such as a Powder which contains pyrethrums specifically for cage birds. These are available online or from a Pet shop.
Dust the Hedgehog lightly with the product. It would also be a good to dust the Hedgehogs bedding as well.
Never use a Cat or Dog Flea Spray/powder! This is poisonous for hedgehogs and will either kill or make them seriously ill!
Hedgehog fleas are nothing like Cat or Dog fleas, and cannot live on any other animal for long.

Some do and some don't - I have seen fleas jump off some of the rescues I have taken in and they are normally treated as a precaution due to the amount of hoggies that are in rescues - would soon spread through them all.

Only about one quarter of the 100 hedgehogs I have treated this year have fleas, very few of them have hedgehog fleas which will not stay on you. The majority of the fleas I encounter are cat and dog fleas which will have a munch on you. Both hedgehog and cat/dog fleas on hedgehogs are treated the same.

I only treat a hog for fleas if he/she has them, its usually pretty obvious when you pick them up.
