On the 13th July, Manchester City Council launched a hedgehog survey to find out where and how many hedgehogs are visiting our city. The response has been fantastic, kick starting an annual survey of hedgehogs for Manchester. The results can be seen below.

No of hedgehog surveys sent in up to 1st of October was 80.

The no of hedgehogs seen was 145.

57% of surveys received covered the Manchester area, with the other 43% coming from areas outside of Manchester including Trafford, Tameside, Cheshire, Bolton, Bury, Wigan and Salford.

The residents of Chorlton and Hulme submitted the highest no of surveys 14 and 12 respectively making up over 50% of all the Manchester surveys received. It was a close battle with Hulme edging ahead with 29 hedgehogs seen to Chorlton’s 21.

The furthest sighting we received was from Congleton.

Out of the 145 hedgehogs seen 5 of those were dead, all of them road kills.

4 families of hedgehogs were reported with a total of 17 hedgehoglets between them.

Only 2% of the Manchester surveys came from the North of Manchester.
