WHEN HAVING A MILLION JUST AINT ENOUGH

SPRINGWATCH in the afternoon had hogs on again and apparently the new hog count is already looking grim with numbers predicted to be UNDER A MILLION -- well w e knew that but it s terrible to have to hear it officially --BERYL --the carer on SPRINGWATCH said all the right things about habitat and pesticided and modern life in general --good for her -- and w ehave to wonder just how many people are listening ---- it s hard not to get disheartened --let s hope springwatch keep on about it --lets have folk actively making gardens hog friendly --it takes time -- but the real answer is a change in our habits .If you really want to make adifference start in your own patch --thats how HEDGEHUGS began -- on a small scale -- making positive decisions about how we garden and encouraging all wildlif .e in .Someone told me thay had to turn SPRINGWATCH off as it is too upsetting --and yes it is -- but the most upsetting thing is what we are doing to our wildlife -not what they do to each other .Ah well am getting off my soapbox now -- off to plant wild flower seeds this week and pile a few more logs and branches up in corners-- it can make a difference .The lady on tv today suggested putting cat flaps in you fences to let hogs through --not sure what I think really -- a little space left open or a thick piece of pipe pushed through does the trick .

A HUGE LOSS TO ALL OF US

This past few days has seen us reeling from the sudden loss of one of our founder members louise -- she was with us from the start always positive --she fostered /rehomed and cared for numerous wild animals and cats. Louise gladly gave up her garage for us to use as our main storage place --she gave up her kitchen table to care for autumn juveniles--she gave us her time and friendship --even though she had a demanding work schedule louise gave up her weekend s to do tombolas /tin rattles and cleaning out .This has hit us all very hard and w e are struggling to come to terms with this tragic loss .Our thoughts are with her friends and family -- louise is irreplaceable independent /feisty /funny and the best of company -- a little crazy like the rest of us ,passionate about wildlife --we really dont know how we can go on without her-- to say she will leave a huge gap in all our lives is an understatement -- THANK YOU LOU FOR KEEPING US GOING , FOR YOUR CONSTANT STRAIGHT TALKING AND ENCOURAGEMENT -- you inspired us from day one and today the world is a darker place without you

FRIDAY UPDATE
Thank you to everyone who sent such lovely messages this week --we do appreciate it -
Hot news from one release site --the horrid feisty little REBECCA has been spotted as cross as ever so she is clearly coping in her new life and may well be pregnant .Mrs bitey went to her new home tonight where we hope she will stay but if anyone is going to dig he r way out it will be her---heaven help the local hogs if she does --.Little dot HAS dug out and gone AWOL and not to be seen for dust as they say --the garden will now be made more secure --there was only one tiny spot to dig and he found it -- luckily he is a hog that will be able to cope and has had the benefit of two weeks getting used to life outside .Springwatch has done better for us this year with lots of hoggy mentions --lets see if they manage to get a web cam on them by next year .The spider twins are doing great in their run and reports are in that the local lads have their eyes on them -- HELEN IS knitting hedgehog bootees just in case she is a grandma this summer --good luck with that one !!!
Tomorrow -- is ANOTHER SCRUBBING DAY with ace cleaner PATand its TARQUINS CAGE --and just to make a point he had poohed up the wall this morning --which is very odd for him -- so he is in the dog house again .TOTAL RELEASES SO FAR 40 -- looking good folks !!!!

TARQUINS HOME MANAGEMENT SKILLS

OUR resident star and old lad has now added a new trick to his list -- he has developed the knack of turning a perfectly made newspaper nest into an apple pie bed and spending all day trying to get out of it .Now we know this is true as we have carefully managed the bed making routine== three thick sheets on the bottom --just going up the sides of the cage and one flipped over so he can get underneath it and hide a bit --but what do we find --by teatime he is all in a tangle and by morning all he can stick out is his little pink spongey nose -While this may be very cute and result in lots of AW BLESS HIMS !!!going on -- it is a mystery as to how he is managing it .We have seen most things that hogs can do with a clean cage and piles of newspaper but never an inescapeable apple pie bed --what a clot he is -- maybe he has taken up origami or maybe he is looking for page three !!!

HENNY PENNY THE SKY IS FALLING --Well that is what it feels like here as we struggle to keep on top of things --please be aware that things are difficult -- and w ealso have lots of family stuff going on --injured hogs must go to vets please --the ten hogs w ehave in all require intensive care and it s not straightforward --if you have an emergency please contact your local vet --also the BRITISH HEDGEHOG PRESERVATION SOCIETY have a list of local carers on their site.
News on BILLY WHIZZ is that he is settling in well in his new home .Little pal is about to start lungworm treatment /MRS MAY is being very odd and w ethink she may be exhibiting nesting behaviour --or it could be the head injury!! /Mrs bitey is also doing well in her new home and dismantling the garden to fill up her new house --which is excellent news /October is still a worry and we are persevering with him --he has the most gorgeous face --but is still so tiny w e cant get him any bigger /all in all wehave an odd little bunch here and thats just wendy and pauline never mind the hogs !! Will be glad when our resident happy goth matt comes back from liverpool to the civilised suburbs of west yorks --w eneed you mattie !!!

BABY BOOM
WE ARE getting reports in of hoglets everywhere -- none here yet but that can change in a minute--litters are a bit late but we hope not too late.Willows have some fab pictures of babies on their site We still have little joe
from last year but he is now afull grown boy --and a pudding --cant believe he was so tiny when he came in .We have another youngster going tomorrow and one to go next week both to supported sites .Tarquin is still doing his origami tricks despite wendys best efforts and w ehave the usual motley crew ready for the next bath rota .Exciting news --in the rescue garden we have a-bee nest which is proving fascinating and wendy has two huge huge hogs coming every night to scoff all the piesand the mystery of our disappearing hogs has been solved a s wehave discovered that a neighbour has erected a new /highly efficient fence --which explains why some of our little squatters are going elsewhere --let s hope they find their way back --pauline and comet are getting lonley on their nightly vigils in the garden .

THE SAD STORY OF MRS MAY
MRS MAY came in a few weeks a go with a head injury -- and responded well to treatment -- if it hadnt been for the fact that she was possibly pregnant we would have doubted if she could be saved at all --but w e did all the right things and pauline ha s been closely watching her for the past few days convinced that the birth wa s imminent .However mrs may has become more and more distressed and w e had the awful dilemma of letting her go and risking it or keeping her here and hoping the litter would survive .She was blind in one eye and the other was injured so we decided it would be cruel to send her to back out and she had at first settled in the rescue. However . yesterday she had trashed the cage for the third time and this morning it was a scene of chaos --one large baby lay dead still with cord attached and mum wa s in obvious distress .We feared she was still in labour or had retained dead babies and were even prepared for a caesarian -but sadly our vet said there wa s no hope and we lost mum and any other babies .Tragic yes /upsetting yes -- but it lead us to contmplate the fate of other injured hogs-- it s a sad fact but for each one w e see squashed -- there is another with life -threatening injuries with only a dreadful outcome in sight --it makes you wonder which is the lucky hog .It has knocked us today -- that we could do nothing to help her --but it would have been worse if she had been left to try to cope in the wild -- we can only do our best and this time it wasnt enough .

HOGS AND NETTING SADLY DO MIX !!! -

We have a little hog coming in who has been tangled in netting so just for the record here is alist of potential NETTING hazards

PEA NETTING --LIFT IT ABOVE THE FLOOR PLEASE
TENNIS NETS --SAME
RECYCLE BOXES --w e have removed ours but it needs to be in the box and not left on the floor
FOOTBALL NETS --
FAT BALL NETS --
FLUORESCENT CONSTRUCTION SITE NETTING --we have had hogs caught in this
garden netting of all types --
NETTING can be akiller --if you have some please lift it above hedgehog level --w ehave seen some nasty injuries and they were the fortunate ones --a netting wound can quickly become infected and maggoty .TO REMOVE netting use the back of a spoon so that you can cut away at the net with small scissors but if in doubt get the hog to a vet who can anaesthetise it and make sure all of the stuff is removed. We once had an ornamental lobster pot as agarden ornament until we found a hoglet asleep in it one morning !! and even the decorative wire trellis you can buy cheaply ha s been known to trap a hog ,Some folk do a quick check of the garden each morning to check for stray hogs in odd places -- no names of course --but it has proved fruitful on occasions -- with the daft babies around who can get stuck anywhere it seems .THIS WEEKEND is heavy rain so no doubt few hogs will be around .COMET has been up very early --maybe she senses the bad weather coming or maybe she is panicking at the sight of pauline clearing out the shed and garage all day --and thinks she might be next -- as they say --IF IT AINT NAILED DOWN !!!!

SATURDAY UPDATE
Matt is due back tomorrow complete with black hat and feather --and a much needed boost to morale we hope--he has the delightful task of sorting out the admissions book and record cards which are in a bit of amess--but we wont tell him that .Today we began the horrible job of clearing our stuff from louises garage --She stored all our junk for over 4 years and it was heartbreaking to go and see the house and garden without all he r cats around --it is going to take us a while and meanwhile we have her funeral on tuesday which is going to be huge a s she was so well loved .
the new boy NETTI stinks the garage out so goodness knows where he has been --smells like he s been stuck in a trawler net--not a garden net .All he has done is scoff since he came in --he wont be here long just a few days --a heavy dose of wormer and maybe a bath in imaverol and he can go again .
Wendy is reporting lots of hogs at her place --we still have none here but have discovered yet another bees nest --maybe we should go into bee rescue next year .
We also have two hedgehog feeder stations for sale -- ifanyone local is interested -- £ 40 each -- these really are cat proof tried and tested a t louises !!
So it s off to put the bunting out for the happy goth --bet hes really missed us /the smell in the garage / the chaos /the bacon sarnis /the sunday dinners /the tick and maggot picking wots not to like matt !!!

BABY SPOTTING
Wendy is now convinced that the little trio of hogs on he r lawn are this years early bunch --they all arrive together and whizz about like mad things .This i s excellent news as it means someone has bred successfully --in the area --w e have put alot of effort in releasing around there and it s great to think it might be paying off .As for the rescue garden still no comers --all pauline is getting are midge bites from sitting out late at night on hog watch and seeing the odd owl --theres time yet and she remains hopeful .We have two more hogs who should leave us this week and then just a few more cages to deep clean --octobe rhas settled well into his bigger hutch and the new hog netty is never seen which is also good -he will be away by the weekend back where he belongs minus a few parasites .The happy goth MATT is back so watch out for some interesting postings this summer--but it might take afew bacon sarnis to ge t him going -- the buckets are all yours matt --roll yer sleeves up lad !!!

MONDAY ADMISSION
Yet another old lad with an eye missing /possibly blind in the other bit scabby and bewildered --by that we mean a hedgehog not either of our husbands -- dont know where they are all coming from --must be arace of one eyed hogs all heading for our doors these days .This one was found in a park and that is often bad news so he wont be going back there if he makes it --some children see them as playthings or worse and he would be an easy target for a dog --we have called him NELSON and its a bit doubtful how he will do --but he si safe and snug and got abowl of grub .
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

WHY IS A TRIP TO IKEA LIKE RUNNING A HEDGEHOG RESCUE
ANSWER -- YOU GO ROUND IN CIRCLES CANT FIND WHAT YOU WANT AND EVERYTHING FALLS APART WHEN YOU GET HOME

GOODBYES TO LOUISE HAMILTON
Today an extraordinary mix of people came together to remember and say goodbye to LOUISE HAMILTON --founder member of HEDGEHUGS who died age 48.People often talk about funerals as a celebration of someones life and today really was just that --from the beautiful austin roses she loved ,the moving tributes ,the solitary piper ,the fantastic food and lovely hedgehog cake -- all parts of her busy and eclectic life. Sad --yes ,tearful --yes ,moving- yes very ,heartbreaking --yes but also joyous and uplifting as family and friends and colleagues all shared stories of LOUISES humour, compassion ,skill and professionalism . It was the sort of "DO" THAT SHE WOULD HAVE LOVED --good food ,excellent company ,a glorious day and a glass of wine and we commented that she really would have enjoyed every minute had she been there -and in a way she was -- she was there in everything and always will be .Thank you to everyone who made this day so special and sent us all home with a smile on our faces --it was what she would have wanted and it was a privelege to be there -- --FROM ALL AT HEDGEHUGS

HEDGEHUGS FLAT OUT

SEEMS the heat and the events of yesterday got to everyone today --the hogs have been flat out in their hutches and the ladies flat out at the garden centre drinking tea /chatting about LOUISE and generally doing nowt in the garden --we all felt wiped out by yeserday so needed no excuse to count the bees and plan flower borders and eat more of louises cake to help the headache pills go down .THIS weather is bad news for hogs --they need lots of fluids --even comet has drained her water bowl the last few nights and she also has access to a safe pond --so please get the bowls out and the bird baths filled --There is adelicate aroma of old dirty socks coming from TARQUINS cage -- w ehave reduced all bedding so the hogs can get some air circulating and joe ha sbeen asleep all day which is very unusual --not like him to miss the rattle of a bowl .PS IT IS VERY BAD FORM TO TAKE THINGS OUT OF FOLKS BASKETS A TTHE GARDEN CENTRE WHEN THEY ARE HAVING A CUPPA IN THE CAFE YOUYOU ARE !!!!

ODE TO JOE

I,m just alittle hedgehog I know Im not that bright
But I do my best to sleep all day and just come out at night
I know I am very clumsy and always get things wrong but you see I had a mummy but i didnt have her long .
I came here into hedgehugs when I was just a tot and all this time Ive done my best and I have learned a lot
BUT now I am a big boy and I think its time I went -
To my new home- with helen and make some more new friends .
I ll have my little run and be happy as can be
And when helen thinks I m brave enough she ,s going to set me free.
So ,sorry mummy pauline you know I ve loved you lots but now im off in to the wild to make my own small tot s.
I will be sad to leave you the rescue s been my home but all hogs even daft ones have the right to run and roam '
GOODBYE FROM LITTLE JOE
