These photos are of a very poorly hedgehog passed over to us from Seahaven Bird Rescue. Early indication shows he has sustained quite a severe blow to the head. He was found very collapsed and dehydrated laying on the ground. He spent last night in the care of my vets in an incubator and on a drip. He is on pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication to help with the swelling. He is being syringe fed at regular intervals throughout the day and night. He has shown very slight signs of improvement today, but he is still critically ill. We are doing everything we can for this little one, but it is still to early to tell if he will pull through.

This was him yesterday, taken shortly after he was found

This was taken this evening. He seems to find it more comfortable to lay on his back, and he is taking syringe feeds well

Update on our most recent hedgehog casualty. Still very ill and unstable and still unable to stand and completely disorientated, but still taking syringe feeds well. He is due back at the vets tomorrow to be reassessed.

Update on our very poorly little hog. He has been back to the vets tonight to be reassessed. He has shown signs of improvement, so we are going to continue with him over the weekend, and then will be seen again on Monday for a further assessment. As you can see in the video, he has improved tremendously but he is still very unstable and unable to stand, but he does have a good appetite. We will continue with his treatment and keep everything crossed that we see further improvement in his condition over the next few days

Our little head trauma hog has been back to the vets this evening. Although he is getting much stronger, there is still only limited improvement in his neurological condition. We have agreed, with our vet, to reassess the situation on Friday, and if no further improvement is made then the decision will be made to pts. Always a hard choice, but we have to do what is best for the animal.

We have today made the difficult decision, with out vet, to put our little head trauma hedgehog to sleep. Never an easy thing to do, but sadly we had no choice.

This is her being anaesthetised prior to the operation taking place

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

She's in very experienced hands with head veterinary nurse, Claire

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As hedgehogs can be unpredictable under anaesthetic, a breathing tube was inserted in case of complications. That way they could have more control and prevent anything going wrong

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Area now shaved and being prepared by our vet, Rosario

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Op now completed, and as you can see she has now come round from the anaesthetic and looking fine

Update on the little hog who had a rear leg amputated. Been to the vets tonight for a check and the area has healed perfectly. The feral pigeon who had a broken wing, which was pinned by my vets, is also doing well and healing nicely

This not so little hedgehog came in last autumn with a deformed back leg. She had the stump amputated at the end of may and is now ready for soft release into secure garden site. I had great fun cleaning this little lady out , Maggie x

Our little amputee hedgehog has today gone outside into an enclosed run, prior to release into the fully secure garden where she will live. Will try to get a photo of her exploring her new area later this evening

'Hope' update. Our little girl who came in last year as a dog attack with puncture wounds and a broken front leg, and who we released recently, has been spotted back in the garden she was released in. She was recognised due to the blue paint mark on her spines. This is the first time she has been seen since she was released, so the opportunity was taken to give her a quick check over and weigh in. She weighed in at 894g so she is obviously doing well. Always such a relief to hear. Thank you to Yvonne Foxton for the picture and the update

Just home from a call out to a hedgehog in Chiddingly. Has an eye missing, and socket is infected. also had a shard of bone protruding from under his jaw. Looks like there is a large abscess too as there is obvious infection there also. Took straight to my vets after picking it up, as wasn't happy to leave it till the morning. Has been medicated and bedded down at the vets for the night and X-rays will be taken in the morning so we can have a clearer picture of what we are dealing with. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looks and we can save this little boy. On a positive note, saw a Barn Owl in flight on the drive home. Swooped quite low in front of headlights, but as I was the only car on the road, I was able to slow right down and just watch it. Stunning !

Update on last nights hedgehog. X-rays were taken by my vets today. This little boy did have a broken jaw, and is also missing his right eye. The piece of bone in the picture is what had pierced through the lower part of the mouth. The area has been sutured to stabilise it and prevent any further damage. He is on a strong course of antibiotics to clear up the bad infection in both the jaw, nasal cavity and eye area. He is eating well and fingers crossed should be ok

Please please please put water out for our wildlife. It is scorching out there. Also with the ground being so dry hedgehogs will struggle to dig for worms and grubs. If you have hedgehogs visiting your garden please put a dish of cat food (chicken in jelly) down for them. Many of them are rearing babies and will be so grateful. Thank you
