Willows Hedgehog Rescue

As expected the new one sadly did not survive the night. The Prickly Bunch has made their first real weight gains all putting on over 5g each with one a fantastic 16g wow. please no more shocks from this bunch. The other female has also put its first weight gain on in over a week just 2g but its a gain. The bag is packed for the Prickles to visit hog nanny whilst we are work.

Wilma one of the all grown hoglets from this. Currently in a secure garden ready to be released back to the wild. This photo was taken in complete darkness how I dont know but will find out. Thats a great pic.

just done all the hogs, i am early tonight, may get to watch some tv for a change. Back to hog. Holy Hog has come back inside, he has lost some weight so back in so we can monitor more and check him over. Dandan, we have not seen for a while since we dismantled his home. He appears to be asleep, must be his age, he must be around 6 now. More weight gains from Lugh, prickles, munch bunch and the few Monkees i still have here. Trying to get them all out before the weather changes.

New hogin is not in a good way. removed maggots, fly eggs and is on heat and fluids. Fox attack with small wounds, another one that looks very doubtful at the moment

One of the news ones went to vets today, no broken leg but the bite marks may have done some other damage. Wounds are still infected but hopefully anitbotics will start to work. Still not eating which is the main consern at the moment. The new hog from last night is still critical but still with us. Found a few bite marks and treatment will continue.

Another new hog in again back leg issue. came in at 1 this morning. The good news we found our little escapee from the other day. Was munching on the food we put out for her.

The female who was taking a bath in the drain has just been returned to finder. All the drains have had new covers. a new home and the joy of having her returned. Two of the smaller hogs have started treatment for Lung worm tonight. Positive poo samples and nasty larva swimming about. YUK I have all the nice jobs.

Two new hogs on the way. Pens all ready for them. Printing paper work as we are running out of daily record sheets. See every time i talk about reducing numbers they come in. Huff puff

The two new hogs have arrived. A small male juv that has a few ticks. will remove them and wait for nature. The other an adult female, no signs of injury but looks down on its luck, will watch and monitor.

Just finished the hogs for tonight one more feed to do then bed. This will be the normal time soon when we are full. A typical day here. Up at 6am. Feed and water to all the hogs before work. Transport any Hoglets or ICU hogs to nannies whilst at day job. Finish work 4pm ish. pick up hogs, home. Garage. get every thing ready for clean. news paper ripping, layering for lining of pens, preparing any food mixes. Then its feed us. Back in garage to clean every cage. feed and water all hogs again including out door hogs. Medications and any poo samples. Any hand feeding through out the night until 11 or 12 midnight. Then sleep.

1st Stoneyhill Rainbows have been saving all their pennies and managed to raise a fantastic amount of £70.00. This is part of our recycle jam jars for charity. eat the jam, wash the jar fill it up and if you are a group we will come and talk about our work Simple. Thats what Stoneyhill Rainbows have done so we will be booking a night to go over and talk to the group. Thanks every penny really does make a difference. Also we received a cheque from a VET practice that is quite some way away, totally unexpected and a great surprise. Thank you

Just picked up another hog looks in a bad way. In the incubator to get warm, fluids already injected and fingers crossed for the next few hours.

Just chopped apples and bananas up for our inmates. They dont get fruit every night so when they do its, all heads peeping out of the news paper , sniff sniff, and then munch munch. Love it.

7 more hogs can be moved outside for one week to acclimatize, once the 7 over the weekend leave us. The male head trauma will be going to a secure garden shortly, this is a test as he may be a release back to freedom if all goes well.

Been very busy here today with hogs going out and coming in. Always the same clear pens out just to fill up again. Charlie is currently at the vets on an emergency call out. Hog in with pop off syndrome the first we have had here. This is were the muscle that controls the draw string effect when a hog balls gets stuck the wrong way. Will post pic later

Pop off syndrome. Hog is back from the VETS looking like new and recovering. Hopefully it will be quick release and returned next weekend.

Pop-off Syndrome: A condition so named by Les Stocker of
St Tiggywinkles, “when the spiny skin is pushed up over the
hedgehog’s haunches with the orbicularis muscle springing tight and
preventing the skin from returning to its normal position. When this
happens the hedgehog’s legs are forced sideways, and anal orifice
and tail are pulled up over the back and the hedgehog is completely
helpless. Check that the hedgehog does not have a spinal injury by
pinching its toes, if there is no reaction an X ray will be necessary.
If it flinches, the orbicularis muscle can be pulled back into position
under anaesthetic. Note this is not a life threatening condition so
treat for shock, hypothermia and dehydration before adminstering an
anaesthetic. This can occur when the hedgehog gets trapped and in
its efforts to free itself, the orbicularis muscle pops over the
pelvis and the hedgehog cannot get it back in place itself.

Suitable food we give to our hogs:
Hedgehog food - a number of companies sell this : Spikes; Ark wildlife; Charnwood and number of others. We use Ark Wildlife as we formed a working relation with them early on.
You can use any small bite cat or dog food -meat flavors only.
Extras s treats: Meal worms, apples, bananas, grapes (we give ours grapes but I know other rescue units dont) Roast chicken, wet dog or cat food, sultanas, pet suit pellets, peanut kibble, sunflower hearts, Roll oats,. Caution: if you use any fruit or wet food please remove any leftovers every morning to avoid flys. I know there will be loads more ideas about to be posted but this is our daily stock items for them.

This is Spiky as named by finders. It came in at just 140g four days ago and is gaining weight nicely. It is now 183g

This is two of the Prickly Bunch. The three remaining out of the 6 have caused us so many sleepless nights, They have been orphaned, ill and finally these two are doing very well. We had to remove the third smaller one (Blue) due to not gaining as much weight.

This is Poppy the pop off female from the other day. She looks completely perfect and back to normal thanks to our VET's Townsend of Bromsgrove

As a result of three builders in Bromsgrove saying yes to our Access for Hedgehogs we have been contact by a local paper wanting quotes. He has a great way of putting a spin on this.
Cant wait to see what he is doing with it.
